Intravenous (IV) Insertion and Maintenance Courses

Intravenous (IV) Insertion and Maintenance Courses

Are you a dentist or a health care professional performing intravenous (IV) insertion or cannulation as part of your role? Emcare has an intravenous training course to meet your needs! This IV course will outline the procedure for inserting peripheral intravenous cannula (PIVC) and consider the various issues that are associated with it. These issues include the legal and professional implications, patient assessment and preparation, recognition and management of complications and the setting up of intravenous administration of fluids for intravenous therapy. The material presented on PIVC is focused on the adult population and while it is recognised that there are specific implications of PIVC in paediatrics, these are beyond the scope of this course. Phlebotomy will not be taught on this course. Total time investment for this course is 7 hours, comprised of 4 hours self directed learning utilising a workbook (with an online test to be completed prior to attending the practical session) and 3 hours of hands-on simulation with an Emcare instructor. By the end of the course the learner should be able to:
  • Discuss the legal and professional implications related to PIVC;
  • Explain the anatomy and physiology of veins;
  • Locate and identify the veins commonly used in PIVC;
  • Discuss appropriate patient assessment and vein selection;
  • Identify the indications and contraindications of PIVC;
  • Discuss the potential complications associated with PIVC;
  • Explain the prevention and management strategies of these complications;
  • Thoroughly prepare a patient in relation to the PIVC procedure;
  • Choose appropriate intravenous cannula;
  • Describe the process of inserting a PIVC.
  • Set up and run an IV fluid infusion
To complete our program, the candidate will:
1) Successfully complete the course workbook and complete the online test (the certificate of completion is required to attend Part 2 of the course)
2) Perform successful supervised IV insertions and fluid infusion setup, using IV training arms
Candidates will receive a certificate of attendance for this course, not for full IV Certification, as a certificate of proficiency can only be given by your employer.
